Apartamento has established itself as one of the leading lights of independent magazine publishing, as influential for the way it uses interiors as a way into people’s lives as for its actual coverage of interior design and products.
It’s another rich survey of bright creative folk, written and photographed by a similarly select group of contributors. Stand-out items this issue: the crazy lo-res opening design for the interview with musician Denton Chris Anthony (he also designed the issue’s silver foil spine design); the glossy green resurrection of eighties design figure Dan Friedman; Jocko Weyland’s paintings accompanying his interview with skateboarder Steve Bailey.
One of the many great things about Apartamento is its age-blindness. Yes, there are plenty of beautiful young people in the issue, and it leads with one of singer Camille Henrot’s young sons dressed as Spiderman, but inside you’re as likely to turn the page and find an 80-year old interviewee as a twenty-something hipster.
