11 Monasteries and Churches of Sifnos
only a few left!
The writing of the present work is a small contribution to the promotion and protection of the Architecture of Sifnos. To this end the Monastic one was selected since important priorities, strategies and spatial relationships which obviously also appear in other domains of the built environment, have affected it with particular strength.
Its analysis may interest professionals and students of the field, while also allowing for its fuller comprehension from the visitors of the island, Greek or foreign, as well as from the local heirs of its tradition.
It may also promote the re-examination of certain fundamental rules for the achievement of cohesive structures of human scale and the establishment of relations between buildings as cells of larger organisms, as well as the recognition of the imperative need for an Architecture in a strong dialogue with open spaces, the environment and the “genius loci” in general.
