Πάνος Κοκκινιάς: Stock Images

NEON’s City Project for 2019, Stock images, curated by Shoair Mavlian, was presented in a
former office space in the centre of Athens. Panos Kokkinias constructs a version of
contemporary Athens presenting a new perspective of the city and the people who reside
within it: a visual study of an urban environment and an attempt to capture the essence of
our time. More than 20 images captured in the years leading up to the summer of 2019
were displayed together for the first time to reveal a collective portrait of Athens, reflecting
on both the realities and fictions of contemporary urban life. This contemporary portrait of
Athens is installed within the fabric of the city itself, an abandoned and disused office space,
left largely unchanged by the artist.

The publication of this exhibition features high quality images of the works, making it a
statement of its own. Along with the images, texts and essays by Dimitris Daskalopoulos,
NEON Founder; Elina Kountouri, NEON Director and curator Shoair Mavlian highlight the
different photographic approaches of Panos Kokkinias towards the city and his own practice.
Additionally, journalist Hubertus Breuer wrote about the archaeology of now in his essay,
while writer Theofilos Tramboulis expanded on Panos Kokkinias’ practice and works.
City Project is an initiative for public art and the city, conceived and commissioned annually
by NEON to a Greek artist. NEON aims to activate public and historical places through
contemporary art, contributing to the interaction of art, society and the city.
