Book Presentation & Exhibition: SPASMATA by T!LT

Next Thursday, 29 January, at 8pm, we are excited to host the presentation–exhibition SPASMATA, on the occasion of the release of the third book by TILT! Publications, a newly established publishing initiative operating at the intersection of contemporary art and ethnographic documentation.

SPASMATA developed gradually over a five-year period. Its point of departure was an open archive of approximately 300 abstract digital drawings, produced through a process close to automatic writing. These drawings were not treated as finished works, but as material for processing, observation, and reuse.

Subsequently, the archive was reactivated through experiments with artificial intelligence, with an emphasis on realism, materiality, and the transformation of form. This dialogical process gave rise to a visual world that led to the creation of a parallel, descriptive linguistic system, designed to name and classify.

A labyrinth of linguistic residues, organic forms, and meta-scientific classifications constructs a world in which language collapses and matter acquires its own voice. Original beings from a post-organic realm emerge as object-creatures that transcend anatomy and logic.

A laboratory of joyful errors for the devotees of the Codex Seraphinianus, the mystical sciences, and unexpected forms. The work balances between poetry and scientific documentation, shaping a peculiar “meta-language” that constantly slips away from interpretation. A book-object that does not explain, but invites coexistence with the unknown.

The exhibition presents a selection of the original drawings, the book SPASMATA, and a series of three-dimensional works that narrate the project’s transition from a digital archive to print and, ultimately, into physical space.

* Codex Seraphinianus is a mysterious book by Luigi Serafini, written in an invented language and filled with surreal images of imaginary creatures, plants, and objects. Divided into thematic chapters, it functions as an aesthetic work of art, inspiring imagination and theories about communication and perception.

KOSTAS HRITIS (TILT!) studied psychology at the University of Crete and works as a graphic designer. He creates his visual work through a combination of analog and digital media. His artistic projects include the book Ophthalmology—a primal, hieroglyphic procession of imaginary sacred mythology—as well as the short film Super 8mm Atenas, produced with the support of the Goethe Institute and Super 8mm Beatnik Ethnographic Productions. He is co-founder and art director of the independent record label Echovolt Records. Over the past decade, he has managed the brand Tilt!, offering a fresh perspective on the souvenir object while expanding its activity into publishing. SPASMATA is the third book published by Tilt! Publications.
