TERATARIUM: Publication presentation, ceramics exhibition and discussion

On Thursday 5 November, 7:30 p.m. Hyper Hypo invites you to the presentation and exhibition marking the release of TERATARIUM, a self-published zine by multidisciplinary artist and musician Evripidis Sabatis (Evripidis and his tragedies). The space will feature a specially constructed display case showcasing the artist’s ceramic works, alongside a selection of his drawings. The event will also include a discussion between the artist and art curator Vassilia Kaga, followed by an open conversation with the audience.

This bilingual publication (English/Spanish) features photographs documenting Sabatis’s ceramic sculptures, a text by the artist, and a prologue by renowned Spanish art critic Joaquín García Martínez.

In its pages, we encounter beings that can be interpreted as monsters, omens of a strange future, or wonders from a world that is at once familiar and uncanny. Tangled masses of tentacles, marine forms, scaly textures, outstretched hands, mutated mobile phones, and sensual yet terrifying openings come together to form a universe of strange and unsettling shapes.

The works reflect on a post-pandemic world, with climate collapse looming, mental health remaining fragile, and the threat of armed conflict intensifying. They raise questions about the commodification of terror, the banality of atrocity, and the pornography of the apocalypse. The grotesque and the horrifying merge with the cute, creating decorative objects for a hyper-capitalist world.

The publication itself is a beautiful, tactile object for art lovers, accompanied by an original artwork by the artist and a poster. It was designed by Barcelona-based studio Phantasia and has a distinctive feature: the cover is located at the heart of the book and bears illustrated typography drawn by Evripidis himself.

Evripidis Sabatis is a Greek artist based in Barcelona. His work consists of songs (sung under the alias Evripidis and His Tragedies), drawings and ceramic sculptures—playful, devastating, confessional, and often tinged with dark humor. Evripidis’s creations take us on a bumpy journey along the fine line between tragedy and the joy of living.

Over the past 20 years, Evripidis has released six albums, composed music for audiovisual works, performed in various cities across Europe and North America, exhibited drawings and ceramics in Athens, Madrid, Barcelona, and New York. He has released a publication of his ceramics, an illustrated book, and has contributed to several art publications and fanzines.
